AIA Dallas Latinos in Architecture Network, is honored to include Zaida Basora, FAIA as our keynote speaker for the 2015 Enlaces exhibition and celebration. Zaida’s presence in Dallas has been influential and continues to transform our buildings, our perception of the city, and the future for a more sustainable environment.

Zaida is an icon of progressive leadership and a visionary in the city of Dallas. She holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Texas at Arlington and a Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University of Puerto Rico. As a champion for sustainability in architecture, she has scored multiple accolades to exemplify and prove her passion for a more conscious sustainable environment. In 2003, Zaida began implementation of the Dallas green building program which resulted in over 40 new sustainable facilities. Currently, Zaida oversees design, construction, and energy management in over 840 city-owned facilities.

Uniquely positioned as a leader in our city, Zaida possesses unmatched insight into policy and a comprehensive understanding of sustainability initiatives. Over the past 20 years she has held several positions with the City of Dallas including Purchasing Agent and Chief Building Official.

She was appointed to lead the task forces for development of the Dallas green building code in 2008, and not only updated, but adopted the green construction code in 2012. Her work championing green building codes in Dallas has been recognized with a 2008 BOAT award of excellence, 2009 CLIDE award in public policy, and in 2014 two CoreNet Global Sustainability Leadership Awards at the local and national level.

Zaida is a nationally recognized green building expert whose professional work has made Dallas a leader in regional and national green building standards and sustainability. On January 2012, Zaida was elected to the AIA College of Fellows in recognition of her significant contributions to architecture and society. She was also recognized by Ford Motor Company as a Mujer Legendaria in March of 2014 and received the President’s Pillar Award from the Regional Hispanic Contractor’s Association in 2014. Her vision for a more sustainable environment and her desire to gather communities around common goals will continue to be her mission as she transitions to become the new president of AIA Dallas in 2016.
